Cold Start Groans
I turn the engine over, it catches no sweat and I hear a series of two groans, both very audible over the engine idle noise. First is a quick higher pitched groan. This is followed by a second groan, deeper pitched and lasts about twice as long as the first. They are definately coming from the engine or tranny area, this is all sitting in Park and happens within a couple seconds of turning the engine over. It's almost like something is shuddering as it fires up.
My first thoughts is that the initial groan is the HPOP building pressure on startup, I have read that it lags a half second or so behing the engine. The second groan is longer in duration, I am clueless, maybe the Low pressure oil pump??
I certainly am not a mechanical whiz or anything, but have never heard these noises previous to the temp getting down to 50 degrees in the morning. It did not repeat later when I started the truck after it had been running.
Are these groans bad?? Do I need to switch to a lighter oil for winter?? (35-45 degrees average low here in socal desert for about 3 months)
