I am having problems with my 86 Ford F150 gas engine, 2WD, auto trans, original miles of 88,000. It will idle -high and low - in park and for an extended period of time. As soon as I put it into gear, it will die out within five or six seconds.
Any ideas of what could be wrong? Thanks for your help in advance.
1st Scan the computer then report any codes. I'm assuming it's the EFI 302 as that is the only way they were offered. If it's been converted to carb let me know. http://fordfuelinjection.com/?p=13 The connector is behind the battery on the passenger side of the engine compartment.
It sounds like a bad IAC (idle air control), however I've seen similar problems from a bad TPS (throttle position sensor).
Also the passage in the intake sometimes gets clogged with carbon. If you take the IAC off you should be able to see the passage. Clean it out if it's clogged.
This is a pretty common problem. If you use the search function you can search for Bad Idle, or Idle problem.
