Trying to decide between a F150 or 250 dsl. This truck will be used daily around town for family and back and forth to work but I also trailer a boat 20 - 30 times per year to the ramp which is about 3 miles away and no hills. The boats weight is between 8200-9000 #'s depending on fuel level. It looks like the F150 will handle around 9000#'s so it will be right on the limit. I know the 250 will do a much better job towing but less practical around town and higher dsl cost per gallon.
Any help/suggestions would be appreciated.
You don't buy a truck for its Gas milage so I wouldn't worry about being pratical. However my dad has a 350 diesel that does just as good on fuel milage if not better. If I could afford the diesel I would do it. It might cost more to fill the tank and buy oil, but you would be happy having the peace of mind that you can take your boat where ever you want with no worries. They are both great trucks. The F150 will handle it with no problem especially if you are not driving far. Test drive them both and see what fits you. Have fun testing them out.
If most of your driving is short trips, you shouldn't get a diesel. Short trips are hard on them. They are designed for long continuious use. My brother bought a used tractor that had been used for loading customer coal for private use. It would be run for 15-20 minutes at a time. It was worn out before it had accumulated a lot of hours and a gasser would have lasted a lot longer.
