I have a '97 Explorer, 4WD with 176K miles on it. Has been running well. Parked it Friday night.....all seemed fine. Sat morning it turns over but will not start. In the last week I had replaced the battery and alternator as they were shot. Last year I replaced the coil pack, wires and plugs and fuel filter. Since this last episode yesterday, I have replaced an oxygen sensor (had a code for that) and the fuel filter and spark plugs. Still it will not start. I have good fuel pressure and all the spark plugs were wet when I changed them out today. All the fuses are good too. And the fuel pump inertia switch is also ok. I am at wits end!!! What could have possible happened that would cause it to not start??? It turns over like it could, but does not spark like it might catch and start running.
wet plugs = fuel but no spark.
Crank sensor, cam sensor, bad pcm signal to coil pack, coil pack, fusing/power to coil pack or pcm are all possibilities.
I would start by verifying there is power on one of the coil pack wiring connector leads. PCM then pulses one of the other 3 in sequence (assuming 6 cylinder) to ground as it fires the cylinder pair.
Coil firing syncronization signal to the PCM is provided by the crank sensor and cam sensor. Crank sensor is used to determine the angle of crank rotation(thus which cylinder pair is at top of stroke). Cam sensor signal is then used to sort which one of the cylinder pair is actually on the power stroke. I think the crank sensor alone will result in coil firing as they fire in pairs anyway, and the cam sensor is mainly used to sequence the fuel injectors.
When you turn the key to the ON position, you should hear the fuel pump prime for a second or 2. If not, check the fuel pump relay. If you do hear it, then it's probably a spark issue and follow Dialtones instructions.
