replacing stock gauges

I have an '89 FSB 302. I am wanting to replace the stock gauges with some "real" aftermarket gauges. Do I have to put the aftermarket ones in an A-pillar pod (or something similar) or can I mod the existing cluster and put them in there. Has anyone done this, or have any feedback.

Would be easier to relocate because of limited space, tie-in with the motherboard for the electronics and so forth.

I considered the pillar but mounted the guages beneath the ash tray. Not hooking up the original ones will force you to look at the good ones.

Equus sells a set of gauges for about $40 for the gauges, hardware and mounting bracket. I would put gauges in an easily seen place such as under the ash tray or maybe under the dash.

That's exactly what I used (Equus)! I have been VERY happy with this brand so far. A three gauge set (mini-pods) was about $45-50 here. Very easy to hook up. I took out the ash tray and mounted the gauges there.

I have though about the same thing. I did a little research and I think it is possible with 2 1/16" guages. Although it will will be tight, just unhook the original ones, cut holes for the new ones and plumb/wire them in.
