I have had problems with this in my 2006 350. When I first connected my trailer to my truck it worked fine. Around 1200 miles while towing I received a trailer disconnected message. later a trailer fault message. This has happened with both trailers I pull. Both have electric brakes also. Took it to the dealer yesterday and they said everything looks okay. Hooked up trailer after service and haven't received any messages yet but trailer indicator lamp does not light up and don't fill it is working like it did several mile ago. Never had a problem with either trailer I pulled with my Excursion but it didn't have a built in TBC.
Are your trailers wired with the big RV style plug? or do they have the little 6 round connector? A problem i ran into with mine was the plug. All my trailers have the 6 round connector on them. So this ment i had to use the adaptor. Well that's fine..plug my 6 round into the adaptor and then into the truck. WRONG!! Even though the wiring on my trailer connector is correct it changed inside the adaptor. I had to take the adaptor aprat and switch the black and blue wires. The black wire goes to the center post which is Aux and the blue wires goes to the actual brake. The connector comes wired wrong for some reason. Just because the wiring looks correct it might not be. Easy way is to look at the cover on the connctor on the back of the truck..i beleive it has the wiring sequence right on the door..compare that to your plug on the trailers. As far as the tow command..check and see if any fuses are blown.
If you aren't getting the green trailer icon, you do NOT have trailer brakes.
Are the brakes of your trailers pure electric, or electric over hydraulic? In the case of the latter, the integrated TBC is not compatible, as the brakes don't pull enough current to make the computer happy (thus the trailer fault). However, since it worked for awhile, I'd venture a guess that you've got a connector or adapter bad.
