OEM Battery life

I have a 1995 E-250 Cargo 130,000 mi. and a 1997 Crown Victoria 160,000 mi. both with Motorcraft batteries.

I know the car battery is original as I bought the car at 1 yr old and have never changed it. I suspect that the van battery is original as well sfter seeing some of the work the previous owner had done, parts used, etc. I don't think he would spring for the extra $.

My question is: Do these batteries usually last as long as this, or have I been extremely lucky. Never had an aftermarket battery come close to these.

I have had several batteries through the years last over 10 years. Some were factory, some were aftermarket.

The biggest factors seem to be luck(the factory got it right) and the way it is used. A battery will last a long time if the lights are never left on, the terminals are kept clean, it's never run completely down, and the vehicle is kept in tune and doesn't take much to get it started. Also the vehicle is driven on a regular basis and is not sitting for long periods.

At this point you are really on borrowed time, a little preventative maintenance might be in order.
