Tailgate

Hi, I have several huge dings and dents in my tailgate. So I went online to search for prices and see what is avialable. But I do not no the difference between a tailgate and a tailgate shell, which do I need? One dent is so deep it is pushing out on the inside.

Could someone also give me an idea how much it will cost to be painted?

And would you recomend any specific site to order from.

Thanks.

A tailgate shell is just the tailgate with no hardware such as lath, handle etc. You'll find that the aftermarket tailgates aren't as sturdy as factory ones. Have you called around to local junkyards?

As said above the after market ones are weaker . The inside/cargo side will spring underfoot and I only weigh 160 lbs. They do fit half decent although one I've had seen to be a little narrower in mount area . They if but seem to bind when latching. And even if in the sun belt is good idea to spray /dump used motor oil inside the "generic" one the like to rust in seams. If no body work is needed my shop charged me 75.00 to paint mine. But I deal with them alot. If are going to use truck like a truck and keep awhile go with oem one. Good luck

Why is it people manage to demolish tailgates more than any other part? I see loads of shiny new trucks around that are immaculate except for the big V dent in the tailgate. In any event.. if you are in the south you should not have too much trouble sourcing a rust free unit from a scrap yard. If you are in the north like I am then you are probably looking at a new part cause everything in the yards is long past recovery. With a little shopping I was able to find a body shop that will paint any part I give them for $100. tailgate, hood, door... whatever. That's a quick prime and paint, no body work, you live with the dents unless you fill them yourself. I was able to get pretty good results with a tailgate for our ranger this year. I found a rust free copy with a few minor dings, did a little body work and had the shop spray it.

I found a complete tailgate for my 88 F250 on ebay. I think I paid around 250.00 + shipping. It had been in storage since 89. The guy took it off his truck to install a camper shell.
