Ford used the NP 435 from 67 to 79 so there was no diesel version. The first diesel was in 83 and had either a C 6 or a Borg Warner T 19.
The gas version of the T 19 has a 5.72 low gear ratio that is non syncro, the diesel version has a 4.02 low gear ratio and is syncro.

From what I remember the 435 had a granny first that was non syncro. Everyone drove them like a three speed because it was hard to get it in and out of first gear.

You well may be able to use the NP435. What you need to do is find a 6.9 diesel bell housing. If it bolts up to the bell housing and the input shaft is the same length and diameter as well as spline count I don't see a problem.

I run 3.55 gears in mine and pull a lot of weight, so I got in the habbit of always using first gear to take off, even when I am empty. Saves the clutch for when I really need it.

If you run 3.55's the non syncro first gear may be an aggravation with the 435 but that is all I really see as far as problems go as long as it bolts up to the diesel bell housing.

I have also seen a few diesels that had the gasser T 19 in them with the granny first gear. That would not be a combination I would like to drive when I was loaded real heavy here in the mountains, I use first gear a lot pulling some of the side streets in town.

All I can really say about the T 19 is it is bulletproof. I have broken just about every part on my driveline at one time or another. The T 19 and the Sterling 10.25" rear axle are still fine.
The Dana 44, the original BW 1345 transfer case, both drive shafts, and numerous U joints are all long gone to truck heaven.
