I believe you will have better luck looking for info on testing the pick up coil under the "Electronic and Ignition" forum further down the scroll of forums.
I have a helluva hard time ever finding the same post twice on this site----but was looking at some ignition problems under that forum last night. Think it was headed up "coil up and die" by Lucky Charm----I do remember Franklin 2 posting up some good info on that thread. They also referred Lucky Charm to the Auto Zone trouble shooting site. All was well worthwhile info.

Worth noting---if you get into needing to replace the pick up coil----you can buy a new distributor for $65---$70 at the parts store. I just did that---but didn't solve my problem. Beginning to think I have a bad wire somewhere on a 429.
