play in steering

okey here is the deal i have a 1991 f150 4x4 it had a 3'' body lift when i bought it and i put an additional 4'' lift later i replaced the steering box bc it had a leak and was caked internaly with mud(dont ask) so i put a remaufactured one off the internet i went to get it aligened and the guy said that the lower ball joints where out so i am changing that plus the upper ones too

but what my question is my steering wheel has about 2'' of play side to side before you feel the truck respond

is that the joint of the steering box?

thax

I'm also having a very similar problem. 4" pro-comp lift, 95 F150, original steering box and ball joints. Getting a lot of play and sloppiness. Where to start?

Lift the hood and with steering lock off rotate the steering shaft back and forth by hand and look at the steering box. If the drop arm moves in time with the column then the play is in the ball joints or the steering linkage. If the play is in the box you can adjust it out with the adjuster on the top of the box. My guess is that there is play in the ball joints.
