87 300 idle problem

Hey, The idle on my truck varies when the truck is warm between about 500 and 1000 rpms Any ideas? Dirty egr valva maybe ?

Yeah, maybe. Could also be a bad throttle position sensor, if your vehicle has one of these. My 84 F250 has one of these, it went bad, and the idle did a lot of strange things... mostly running too fast at idle but sometimes dropping in speed as well. Don't know if the O2 sensor would affect this or not. Anyone know for sure?

Hi, Jared:

Sorry to say but no I don't know how to check the TPS. I had my local mechanic do it because I needed to get it past the emissions testers and quickly. I assume that they hooked it to a computerized tester that found it was not working but do not know for sure. Once they replaced the TPS, the engine ran much better and has a warm idle speed of about 650 rpm and not its previous 1150 rpm. They also tested the O2 sensor and found that it was working fine.
