hey guys, I just got done a complete front brake job (pads, calipers, cut both rotors, inner seals, etc.) on my f250 4x4 and everything went smooth, but after i bled them the first time, and i took it around the block and I kept hearing this whine, and all I can guess is that its the vaccum pump. I just replaced it a month ago because it spun a bearing and the shaft was loose. and it didnt make this noise before the brake job. I bled them again to get the sponge out and it got it, but the whine is still there. any info would be appreciated. thanks guys!
Did you get a new vacuum pump or a reman? I had a reman goo bad after a couple months. Anyway, If you are sure it's the pump it must still be under warranty?
Determining where a specific noise is coming from on these noisy engines is tough. I use a piece pipe (3/4 conduit) held to my ear and the other end near the source of the noise to pinpoint the location. Just don't get the pipe to close to moving parts, it hurts. Don't ask
Just wanted to add in here, as perhaps a confirmation note, that when my pump was going out the bearing was making a noise somewhere between a whine and a squeal - a typical bearing noise in my limited expericence.
Mine became loud enough quickly enough that I didn't dare drive it any further than directly to my mechanic.

hey thanks for the replies...jim, yes it is a reman, but i bought one with a lifetime warranty, (always) but the sound is so hard to describe almost too much vacuum. does anyone know how to check this (if there is a way)???? and why did it start when i put new brakes on? i mean there is plenty of pedal there but the wa wa wa wa wa is gettin old. thanks again for the replies
If you are getting good brake pedal feel the pump is likely OK. You really need to pinpoint the source of the noise.
Is the noise louder under the hood or in the cab?
Does the heater go from the floor to defrost normally? (vaccum controls this).
The brake booster is vacuum assist too and since you just bled the brakes it may be the booster check-valve or the booster itself going bonkers.
Luckily our diesels have a simple vacuum system so it should be easy to find the noise. Follow the big hose coming off the vacuum pump. On my 96 is goes to a manifold where it is directed to the rest of the truck. Mine hase a diaphram in the manifold that may also be the wa wa wa wa you diescribed.
hey jim, at first i tried listening to it from under the hood while my brother stepped on the pedal, but the engine drowned out everything, the only sounds i heard came from inside the cab at the floor. i figured id give it a few days, to let everything settle, and seat, and it seems to have worked!!!! , now everything's fine. I dont know what i did but Im good at it!!! thanks again.
