Just a curious question!

I was crawling around under my truck last night looking for anything that might need attention, and just happened to notice this huge weight, or, steel collar on the rear driveshaft just forward of the rearmost U-joint. What is the purpose of this? Truck is an 05 F-350 CrewCab Short box 6.0 with auto tranny.

i think it is to help balance the drive shaft. i thought that it is attached to the rear axle though.

all manufacturers have been doing something like that for years. If you have a vibration or harmonics that you cant seem to get rid of easily, hang a weight on it. Ever seen any vehicles with weights on the exhaust? The mustang has 20 pound weights inside the rear quarter panels. The super duty is prone to vibrations in the driveline, put a weight on the driveshaft, its gone! Its kind of like taking an aspirin for a toothache, you dont feel it any more, but its still there. Like I said, its been happening for years,Ford, Gm, Chrysler, Toyota, all of them do it.
