I am new here and could help people out quite a bit. I know just about all the tricks on removing 5.8's from vans or trucks. I have a bit of knowledge of diesels which are my number one choice of engine, but I drive a gasser right now.
But I have a simple question that people have confused me on. If there is too much oil in a motor will it leak out the rear main seal or the rear seal on the oil pan. I think the rear main is leaking, but the oil is a little over the full line.
the oil will leak out the seals only if the seals are bad. Overfilling the oil, if its high enough, the oil will contact the crankshaft and cause a foaming effect. Whipped up oil would more than likely be ingested into the combustion chamber if it was thrown up unto the reach of the pcv valve. Bear in mind, overfilling is never good under any circumstances. If the pcv valve became overwhelmed with excessive oil, crankcase pressure will build possibly causing seal failure.
Thanks, the rear main is brand new and appears to be leaking. I didn't install it so I don't know if it was installed right or wrong. The oil level is just a hair over the full line.
I would more think an incorrect installation. If you have a lot of miles on it, there might be a groove worn into the crankshaft. If so, there is a wear sleeve to put on to prevent premature wear. Worn main bearings can also cause premature failure.
