intro and question

Hello Blue oval guys,
I am a proud chevy owner and am looking at a Ford. most of the chevy guys would prob kill me for doing so but in New England it is much easyer to find a ford with what i want at the price i want then a chevy. Not to say i don't love my truck but somthing about this ford tells me it would be a nice truck in addition to my chevy. I am not a big fan of newer trucks of any kind which might seem strange as i am not that old. Any ways i have to give for alot of respect after riding in my freinds 2003 mustang svt cobra a few weekends ago. Wow with that super charger and the six speed manual trans those cars FLY!! I also like the lightning but have never seen one in a manual trans. ANy way that is not why i am back on this site. A while back i stumbled a cross a stick1978 f250 with the 4 speed and four wheel drive and 351 m motor in it. sure was a nice truck but i did not have a place to store it and well it had alot of rot as it is a plow truck so reluctantly i passed on it but maybe that was for the better. A few days ago i found a 1970 F 100. It is also a 4 speed manual trans and 4x4 drive. I wanted a manual and 4wd because i plan on doing some light off roading and mudding and my chevy is 2wd so i don't need a street truck. I still don't have space but this one is really tempting. It has a 302 in it and a 6 or 8 inch suspention lift kit with bigger tires of what size i do not know maybe 35's or 33s. all of these are pluses from a off road stand point. It is also from colorado so it has less salt damge then the commen New England trucks. Any way i am going to look at it this weekend and wanted to kow of anything i should pay close attention to? I was thinking ... steering play, cab mounts cab corners rockers windsheild frame. Any other key spots to look for worn out parts and or rot/ I know it is going to have alot of worn out bushings and such but i am looking for more of the main problem areas. Also any typical mechanical failer pints on these trucks?

Sorry for the long post but i wanted to say hello
IAN
oh also the guy is asking 400 for it. and i will try to post some pictures of it and my truck

For 400 bucks, it's hard to go wrong!

Cab corners are definitely a good place to look for rot. Some people feel that the 302 is too small for a truck, especially a 4X4. but in an F-100 that's used mostly off-road and not doing a lot towing or hauling, it should be adequate. And you can always upgrade later if you feel the need.

thats tiger dan. I would like to keep it simple and plain. the 302 is fine for me asi am looking for a light offroader not an offf road only vehical. Also i would like to get thebest millage possible from this truck but i knowolder v 8 and big tires don't help that. any idea on what i should expect millage per gallon wise? Also the manual trans should help me out some. Last question for you guys is was PS standered and option or not avalible?

Thanks for all the help

Thanks if i get the truck i will do so but for now i will post up some links:

pic 1 NOTE: it lookslike i will need a new turn signal and a grill. I can get both from LMC but is there any other places?

http://s65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...gAnch=imgAnch1

Pic 2 Note: this is tthe part of the truck needing the most work according to the owner. Also I am conserned about the rust area near the center roof support in this picture

http://s65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...nt=70ford3.jpg

ANd this is why PIC 3. I was thinking since i do have limited funding maybe i will make my own carpet or just bed, liner the floor boards after they are cleaned up. Also i might have to buy a door panal fro LMC unless there are cheaper ones out there. and maybe a dash pad too

http://s65.photobucket.com/albums/h2...nt=70ford2.jpg

PIC 4
She is definatly going to need a good cleaning to get all the mold/ tree sap off. And by the looks of things some new front tires. oh and the bed sides would need to be cut down a bit

Are you talking about what appears in the pic to be rust in the flat part of the roof, about 8-10 inches back from the leading edge? That appears to me to be just surface rust rather than rot, and is really quite common. It's from condensation that collects under the roof getting trapped between the roof and the support. Rot will occur in places where standing water can become trapped, like the aformentioned cab corners, the bottoms of the doors, and the floor. I'd pull back the carpet and take a look at the floor, especially right at the edges by the rocker panels as well as look at the bottoms of the doors.

There are so many of these old trucks around that I wouldn't even bother with buying new stuff, unless you just can't find any good used body and interior parts.

And for my taste, I'd start looking for a bed for it. They look so much sharper with a good bed on them!

As for the P/S question, it was an option. I assume this one doesn't have it? If you're thinking about the possibilty of swapping it in, take a look through this forum as there are several recent threads about swapping P/S into a 4X4.

hey to point out errors but ps was only available on 2wd trucks you can swap ps off of a 73-79 model. as for the grille just unbolt it pull it off and pound out the few little dents, as far as parts check out macs they have some good stuff. if you are wanting it for off roading bedliner the whole floor inside and out and call it a day. other than that yank off that bed and put a real one on it, as for the door panel forget new parts find a salvage yard and pull what ya need from there.

Wow thanks for the info. PS would be a must on this truck. i had a 11/4 ton dodge with 4x4 and manual steering and it was a bear to drive on road . Also i don't know were you all are located but here parts for this vintage are hard to find. A bed would be a real challange. but i agree a real bed would look great on it. Also that was my plan to bed lin the cab floor the frame the inside of the fenders and then go out and use it. i say light off road cause it would be a daily in the winter. Thanks for the tips. KNow any were to find parts i mean used parts?

Thanks

Yeah, we're at opposite ends of the country. Plenty of them out here. Can't blame you for wanting P/S, and the bigger the tires, the worse it is to steer at low speed without it.

yeah that is definatly true. agina i am not going for a rock crawler or anything with it. I just want a lassic that i could take out and play in the mud with or go trail riding. No hard core stuff is intended for this as i know that they are stiff any way. i just want somthing i can take and play in the mud with and drive on snow covered trails. i was thinking a futer mod after power steering would be a winch.

Thanks for the help. and i am going to look at it tomarrow

dont know what wheel base it is but if you like the look and to give you more chances the step side beds on these were the same or very simmilar until 79 maybe even newer than that as for the ps you can get conversion kits online you can also get disk brake conversion kits online (jeffs bronco graveyard) or you can try to find a 73-79 1/2 ton in a junk yard and just jerk the whole front axle with ps and put it under your truck, i think the ps takes a little modifying to make work but the axle and brake are a dirrect swap.

if your 71 is an f100 like you previously stated than it should have front coils.
