I'm replacing my ball joints, but the cottier pin and bolt are rusted together. Does anyone know of any kind of impact wrench or tool I could use to loosen the bolt?
Try and find the hole where the cotter pin went thru and drill it out. Applying some heat to the nut and remove the nut with an impact wrench should do the trick.
Get it hot, red hot isn't going to hurt anything, your replacing the joint and nut anyway. I have found that a lot of times an impact gun isn't as good as just a good 3/4" drive braker bar and socket. If you get it hot and still can't move it, heat it again and jam an old candle on the threads as close as you can get to the nut. It was a trick that I read on here for getting the nut off the radius arm but it works on pretty much anything you can heat the nut up on. Capilary action will suck the wax into the treads and make it a lot easier to break free.
Sometimes impact won't work if its really rusted, especailly with a cheapo impact. Have to break the nut loose before impact.
Yeah, either drill or hit a nail through the cotter pin hole to get that out. breaker bar with a 4 foot pole should do it. Otherwise you'll have to try some other things
Heat the nut up, then try. Heat the nut up and melt some wax onto it. If the wax can penetrate, it will dry and expand...you know how wax is.
