Smile A few ?

I have a few questions that maybe you guy and girls could help me with.

1984 f-150 short bed
300 six 1bbl 137,000 miles
4spd overdrive
8.8 rear

1st, would it be beneficial for me to run synthetic in the transmission and rear end?

2nd, if so, is there a problem with putting in the synthetic with the left over residue from the petrolem based oil?

3rd, does anyone have any opinions on a remote duel oil filtration. Would it prolong engine life or would it be trouble than its worth.

4th, basically the same questions above for an oil cooler?

I would like say that this site is awsome, and its great to see and read the posts from people that love their trucks as much as I love mine.

Thanks guys

I like synthetics and run it everywhere. Mixing isn't bad for what remains isn't all that much anyway.
Dual filtration.. Sounds cool but with your milage it could be a waste of money.
I don't think an oil cooler would do any help and might even do harm by keeping your oil too cool.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of synthetic oils. Yeah, there's a lot of debate on this and it definately has 2 sides but I like to change out my oil and other fluids regularly. This removes the grit and gunk that forms during use. Some guys put expensive synthetic oil in their trucks and then forget all about changing it for way too many miles. Oil has 3 jobs: lubrication, cleaning, and heat exchange. A good quality petroleum-based oil that is changed routinely will do all 3 of these at reasonable cost.

Don't think I would do the dual filtration, just use a good quality oil filter and change it regularly. A remote filter can be convenient, though.

An oil cooler is usually a good idea for a vehicle that is towing heavy loads in mountains. Both engine oil and tranny fluid can get scorching hot under heavy load. If the oil / fluid gets too hot, its ability to lubricate properly decreases and damage can result. Look at the trucks for sale on Ebay sometime. Lots of them with 100k miles have new or rebuilt trannys. In a lot of these cases, the owners were towing a big 5th wheel but didn't have a tranny oil cooler installed. Yes, it is possible for an engine or tranny to fail from excessive heat even if it does have a cooler installed but it usually helps prevent heat related problems. Considering the reasonable cost of an oil cooler, it looks like good insurance to me for anyone who tows big loads.
