Just bought what was supposed to be a ZF transmission, and should have paid more attention. When I got home and started to clean it up, it looked just like my M5OD. The ribs are rectangular instead of diamond shaped, and there aren't any PTO openings. I emailed the guy I got it from, and he said it was out of a '95 F450 super duty. It's a 4 speed plus overdrive. What in the world do I have, and is it any good?

What motor did it come from? One of the tow trucks at the shop has a 5 speed trans and it's not a ZF and I have no clue what it is but it's not a Mazda trans. I think the chassis is a 450 or 550. Can't recall right now. I do n=know that the truck has over 300K miles and the trans has never been touched so it must be good.
The mazda is a pretty small trans. Did the trans you bought have a rear mount e-brake drum on the tail end of the trans? Maybe the seleer bought it from some one and they told him the same story?
The guy seems to think that all manual 4-speeds w/ overdrive are the same. I didn't check the dimensions, but the tranny I bought has the same 3 plastic plugs at the top rear of the case that the Mazda does. No, it doesn't have a rear mount e-brake.
This thing has got to be a Mazda, but I didn't think they put them into bigger trucks, especially F450s.
In the meantime I've contacted him, and he's found a ZF, so we're working out the details. (He's in Topeka, and I'm in KC, so I don't want to be running back and forth more than necessary.) He wants to know why I want a PTO (I don't), and I want to know if there's an e-brake on the back.
What version of ZF do you need, small block, big block or deisel and 4x2 or 4x4? The heavier trucks should have the rear mounted e-brake drum which is the same as a 4x4 trans even though it's a 4x2 truck.
I agree that it sounds like you have the M5 trans and I am pretty sure it never came in anything over an F250.
