Gang,
I'm a newby and would like some input. I own a 93 F150 2WD w/ 4.9 6 cyl. I'v ownd it sence 96 and only replaced tires, bracks and oil. It's in need of an overhaul. I'm thinking of replacing the stock motor with an Creat motor from Ford. ( 302, GT40)
How hard would this be? What else would I need to change? Will my trans bolt up?
If this is to much trouble can I get Hi perf goodys for the 4.9 ?(300cid/6cyl)
In my opinion, its more beneficial to upgrade that 300 than put in a V8. The modifications you would have to do are numerous to switch from I6 to V8. For instance, motor mounts, wiring harnesses (even more so on your '93 cuz more is electrical), new computer (standard on almost any motor swap where you're changing sizes), possibly fuel system too, but I don't think so. But yes, your trans will bolt up, 300 I6, 302, and 351W all have the same size block.
Besides, the 300 I6's have the potential to put out an insane amount of torque compared to a V8, even though you might not be able to build the horsepower that high.
Check out the sponsor list to the left for some good "goodies" for that 300 and I'll bet you could come out with a pretty nice I6.
Personally I wouldn't swap from the 300 to 302. 300 to 351 maybe. IMO you'll be happier and better off rebuilding the 300. Even though it is SD/MFI there is a lot that can be done to wake it up. Take a trip further down the forum the the topic related to the inline sixs. There is a wealth of information available. Also, look up the forums over at Classic Inlines for more info.
Thanks!
I had some time to look over at some cool stuff for the I6. You helped me to decide to "wake up" the 300. For the most part I belive I will be hapy whith this. the truck has done every thing I have asked it to so far. whith a few mods I belive I will have the work horse I need.
