Cooper Discoverer Tires

I am looking to get new all terrain tires and I was wondering if anyone out there has any experience with Cooper Discoverer ST tires. Opinions welcome before I go with them instead of BFG All Terrain TAs...Goofy 18" wheels . Looking for traction as well as treadwear. THANKS!

I happen to sell Cooper tires. The S/Ts are great in the mud and if you drive gravel roads as the tread compound is cut and chip resistant. They tend to wander a bit going down the highway in my opinion. I really like the ATR much better. The solid rib provides great highway mannerisms and the tread compound is new for Cooper and is rated for 50,000 miles. You'll probably only get about 40-42 if you keep them rotated. The S/Ts will only get about 35K. I had a set on a 03 Ram 1500 make it 17K but that was running hard gravel 300 miles a day on nothing but gravel and a little highway.

I sell a lot of Coopers and you can't beat the price for an American made tire. That is one of the biggest selling points.

Matt,

I saw that Cooper just came out with the Discover STT tire in 18's. I was thinking either the 33 or 35's. What is your 2 cents on those tires? Or anyone else? I know that my friend's dad has them and likes them. I drive a lot on the highway (commute to/from work) and sometimes off-road. Would just like your opinion and everybody else's on those tires. I'm looking to buy some soon.

Also, for anybody that reads this with 35's, how much of a power decrease did you notice? I have the 3.73 gears. My brother bought a Chevy 1500 and has 35s on his but when we pull the boat down to the keys with his truck, it struggles and we are talking a 19 foot boat.

Thanks and happy trucking!

I currently have the GoodYear's A/T and I have 60,000 miles on them with about a 1/4 tread life left. I rotate them religiously about 3 to 5000 miles. Can I expect the same? Or out of the possible many brands, what do most consider as the best tread wear tires? I really want a more agressive tire so i am expecting the tread wear to be faster than my current tires!

Thanks again.

I really like the Cooper STTs. They don't seem to cost to much, and look great, and I'd amagine they'd pull really well off road.

How much would a set of Cooper STTs run in about 285/70R17s and even 305 w/17s
or 285s with 18s?

I love the STTs. I have the 37x12.50x17s on my 79 and do very well off road. We put them on a lot of pickups, but they're still pretty new in design and we haven't gotten a lot of feedback on them. They compete directly with the Goodyear Wrangler MT/R but at a much lower cost. They offer the same 3 ply sidewall and Armor-Tek casing to stand up to abuse that the MT/R does.

1/4 tread with 60,000 miles? I'd have to see it to believe it. Most car tires don't last that long. Remember that tires are legally bald (and dangerous) at 2/32nds and recommended replacement is at 4/32nds.

Matt,

I will take a picture on Sunday and post the tread of my tire. Or try to get a good picture. I have currently 59,000 miles on my truck and just got an oil change 4,000 miles ago and they told me i had about a 1/4 left. I bald indicator is still a ways from the top of the tread. All I'm saying is that these are the original tires, i bought the truck and i have 59,000 miles on it and they are not bald. Like I said, I rotate them regiliously and I drive mostly highway. I would say about 80% of the time I'm driving during the week. Drive an hour to work and then an hour home, then gym and back home.

I will take a pic sunday or monday.

The Goodyear Wrangler A/T is a good tire, but it is notorious for only going 40,000 miles and being bald at that. Thats what I had on my Jeep from the factory, I got 42K out of mine. I thought that was pretty good. I really like the Wrangler RT/S much better than the A/T. Its good that you got that many miles out of them, but I doubt you have an actual 1/4 tread left, they should be at replacement now.

Check out my gallery. I went with the ST's with ice studs because a lot of my driving is on winter roads. They are a bit noisy, but not excessive. Looks like they will wear great and I do quite a bit of rocky gravel roads.

How much for 33/12.5-17 in the STT?

I think my 37-1250-17s were $230 retail, the 33s were around 180 if I remember correctly.

Matt, if I stick a ruler down in the tread on the stock BF Goodrich Radial Long Trail TA's, what is a safe tread depth? Dealer said they needed to be replaced.

Thanks,

Dave
