O.k I have asked this question on another thread but didnt get much of a reply. I bought a 06 f-350 with 6.0 and the towboss package. We have a 12,000 lb 5er that I will be pulling, wondering about the tow/haul mode. As many of you are aware that the 4.33 gears on the towboss turns about 2350 rpms at 70 empty. Am I going to even need to use the tow/haul mode? if so I will really be turning some rpm's at 70 pulling my 5er. Any advice or opnions ?
Select the N.ormal or the Tow/Haul mode based on what the truck is doing while it is going down the road. If in Normal mode, the tansmission is not constantly hunting for a gear you are fine. If it is constantly hunting for a gear then switch to Tow/Haul mode. Also if you are descending a hill or in stop and go traffic the Tow/Haul mode better helps to hold the truck back and does change the programing of the VV Turbo to act somewhat like and engine brake.
The Tow/Haul mode still uses all the gears just like the Normal mode, difference is in Tow/Haul mode the transmission holds the gears longer before upshift to help get things rolling quicker or pull a hill better. Then when you slow down the Tow/Haul mode downshifts at different rate to help slow the truck.
So select the mode that works best for whatever condition you are in at the particular time. You will get a little better fuel mileage in Normal mode than in Tow/Haul mainly do to the shorter upshift time.
jmo, With a 12k load you will probably find that the tow/haul mode works best all-around. I particularily like the downshifts when getting off the freeway or going down a canyon. As blackhat mentioned, the t/h changes the shift points up and down... The easier (or harder) you drive will also directly affect the shift points. At highway cruising speeds, there is no RPM difference with or without t/h.
FWIW When I tow, I'm almost always in t/h and usually try to drive easy--> Because my load (big boat) is one of my best friends
