Gages are screwy.

Ok, here is the question. If i change my gage cluster will my gas gages work, charging, etc.?

I changed a sending unit on a 89 for ranger before and it fixed the problem, but both are screwy in my truck. my oil pressure gages is not reliable...or my engine has now oil pressure. it would also indicate that my alternator barely works.

I want to put a tach in my truck, preferably stock location. I guess I can just install plug and play with another gauge cluster BUT!! will this fix the gas gauges problem? the oil? or is it all the senders that are going bad?

Ok, lets say all my gauges and senders are crap. I really want reliable gauge, but where do I put them? I can put like two on the pillar, but no more because eventually I want to put a spotlight in the pillar(kinda like the police kind) Would it be worth while to make a whole different gauge cluster and put in the aftermarket ones and cram them in the stock location?

are there aftermarket gas gauges?

where do I find gauge pillars?

thanks,

much appreciation if someone or many could answer all the questions.

Jeremy

Pillar gauges can be optained from almost every major gauge company, just click to the left of your screen for some examples [sponsers]...trick is finding one to fit the year of your truck, lol.

What exactly do your gauges do now? Do both tanks read the same or does one work better than the other?

In my stock dash cluster I only have the speedo, tach, ammeter and fuel gauge still hooked up. The tach, speedo and fuel gauge work fine, the ammeter has not moved in 20 years.
Over the speaker location I installed an under dash three gauge pod that has a volt meter, mechanical oil pressure and mechanical temp gauge pack.
On my pillar I have a pyrometer and boost gauge.
Under the dash I have an engine oil temp gauge.

Starting to look like an airplane cockpit, but I do know what is going on with the truck and engine.

Sounds to me like you may want to check out your instrument cluster ground connections, its unlikely that all would be going bad at once!

ammeter moves, but barely.

the gas gauges working sometimes, but not very accurate I'm sure. the front tank says 1/4 tank when it only takes 6 gallons to fill it up.

oil pressure works, but I highly doubt it is accurate and I dont trust it.

thanks for your help guys. think I will work on getting the fuel gauges to work better and try to cram some small guages in the cluster.

My rear tank works pretty good on the gauge but the front reads full until almost empty then it drops to around 1/8th of a tank. New tank senders are pretty spendy (way over $100 last I checked) so I just live with it.

If your oil and temp move around in unison you could need a new inst. cluster voltage regulator.

Amp meters seldom work on the old trucks, that's why they went to voltmeters in '87.
