Fellas, I was glad to find out yesterday that I have a collapsed lifter which was causing the bad noise in the motor compartment. Here is the senerio. I have recently just rebuilt the top end of my 390 about 8 months agoand have had quite a few trips to the store and such, so a pretty good break in. So my buddy invites me to a car show about 25 miles away that is all highway and I kept a speed of about 60 to 65 miles per hour there and back. On the way back I notice a real real bad like lifter noise. I limp home and find this problem. Im pissed off that I need to tear down the top and such to repair this. My question is what motor oil should I use in the future with this comp cam and lifter set up. 218,218---262-262 and what causes this most likely as I dont want to do this again for awhile. Please dont just say sometimes their bad from the start. Thanks DJ Happy roddin
Well, sometimes they ARE bad from the start. But not often.
I recommend a 10w30 or 15w40 diesel rated oil. It has the additives necessary to protect the cam, and is actually recommended by the cam manufacturers if you read their articles. Alternatively, something like Valvoline VR-1 has the necessary additives too. I wouldn't go too heavy. You simply dont need to. 10w30 or at the most 15w40.
