clunking noise in front end

I have a 2000 superduty 5.4 4x4 i have been to a ford dealer and frontend shop they both have ruled out ball joints and said they were tight as can be. They replaced tie rod end at pitman arm and it helped a little bit but still did not fix clunking, it is almost like metal hitting the frame right under my feet while driving. please help its driving me nuts!!!

There was a recall for the 2000 Fords. It replaced the front spring isolator or something like that. I had it done to mine and no more clunking.
Good luck.

Hey, my 2000 F250 does the same thing. Sounds like a tailpipe banging but the sound is coming from the front somewhere. It sounds the worst over washboard or small pot holes. I have searched and searched to find something loose but, no luck.

Check your front sway bar link bushings. My 2000 did the same thing and the sway bar bushings came up through research. Sound went away for good after replacing them. I recall the bushings are not sold separately, which requires you to replace the link on each side as an integrated piece.

Thank you for the info, I got under the truck today and found alot of play in sway bar links. Movement was not up and down just side to side, i also found that the boots on the links were trashed. I will start getting prices on them tommorow, Thanks again for the help.

I had the same problem. The bigger issue is that the parts places do not carry the links. I calle dthe dealer and they wanted almost 80 bucks FOR ONE!.

Go to fordpartsonline.com. I found them for 41 and change each. OEM parts. I should have them by Monday and wil put them on that night.

Good luck

another thing to do while replacing the links is to replace the sway bar bushings on the axle, then drill a hole through the metal clamp that hold them on and through the bushing, add a grease zerk fitting into the clamp. Now you have something else you can grease and make it last alittle longer

Isolate the noise by having someone bounce on the truck while you are under it. Hold your hand on the link and you will feel it shift or thud if it is bad. That's how I found mine.

Look back to my message where I found the parts online. Otherwise, you will have to go to the dealer and pay almost twice the cost.

I had the same problem on my 99 F-350 and had all the bushings replaced on sway bar links and sway bar. Noise went away. Cheap fix about 45 bucks for all bushings. Took about 1 1/2 hrs to do.

the early design isn't as good as the late ones, if your buying complete links get the later ones.

Just for your info guys it was the sway bar end links. I got both links at the ford dealer for $41.82 a piece, they took about 20 minutes to install both sides and the noise is completely gone. Thanks for the info everybody.
