I'm getting a new cam and they wanted to know my axle ratio. I said I didn't know it right off hand but I could find out. So I went out and jacked up the rear, spun the tire 2 full rotations like the guy at the parts house said and came up with about 3.00. I said to myself I have never heard of a 3.00 rearend. So I called my dad and he said the same thing. So my question to you all Did the '73 F-100 have an avilable 3.00 rearend?
Okay one question why did they need your rear axle ratio i don't see the need it has nothing to do with the cam. The big 3 offered different axle ratio's some were standard but some you could order if you bought new.
I don't know why they wanted rear axle ratio but I said OK. My dad boutght the truck used so he didn't know what axle ratio it had. We haven't messed with the axle ever in the 30+ years we have owned it. We might pull it all apart and do a complete overhaul on it. But it would be nice to know without tearing it apart.
They might of wanted to know the gear ratio, b/c if it is real low numatically, they might want to give him one with alot of power gains down low to help with acceleration.
Anyway, they had a couple different gear ratios around that area.
2.75
3.00
3.08
3.07
You can go check the bolt circle on the rear end, and if your lucky it will have a metal tag somewhere with some #s on it telling what gear ratio you have.
Or, you can check the door jab or vin #(but I don't remember which number/letter you need to look for).
Do You know if all these gear ratios were 28 spline or 32? thanks

cabbage, I'm not sure about all of them, but I know the 3.07 is 28 spline, and the rest could be either 28 or 31, but I'd say more than likely 31 for the rest of the gears.
I'm not sure if it is the original axle. Why would someone want such a low ratio? I took it by the shop today and did the same thing I did. They said it was most likley a 3.00.
Automatics had the 3.00 gears for hiway speeds and driveability. I have a AT & 3.00 gears with 31.5" tires and can cruise 76 mph @ 2500 rpm's. Not much of a towing vehicle however. I also have a '68 with NP435 4 speed and 4.10 gears. Not the most driveable on the freeway, but can tow a houses or a train, like in the old adds. It also helps having a fe 390.

Its 2WD. The stock tires were 29 or 30 inch tall. Right now it has 32" BFGs on it. You can't take the back of the diff off, no bolts.I think it is a 9" rear but not sure.
