Just bought an "06 Supercrew. Everyone asks, "What does it mean, Triton? I'm tired of saying, "Hell if I know". I'm sure you've all been asked before, and I'm sure there are more than a few threads on the subject, but here it goes, "What the hell is a Triton engine?" Thanks! Bill
don't know the exact reason but maybe it has to do with the 5.4L having 3 valves per cyl, like a Triton has 3 prongs. Thats my guess and I'm sticking to it (well until someone else tells us the real reason) lol.
IT is just the name of the engine. It had nothing to do with how many valves the engine has. The older ones were tritons also, they only had 2 valves/cyl. The triton is a modular engine that Ford puts in thier trucks and larger Suv's. Chevy has it's own name, it is called the Vortex. Each auto manufacturer has thier own little descriptive terms. Gone are the good old days of small blocks and big blocks, pontiac engines were known for thier HP and chevy was known for thier ability to rev high. Ford had Windsor and Cleveland blocks. One was known for oil leaks and one wasn't. If you put a small block 350 in a Camaro it would be really fast but if you put a 302 in a Mustang it would be really fast also. This has been going on for years and years. Ford/ Chevy, Toyota/ Nissan, Pontiac/ Dodge. They all compete in one way or the other
That was a great page to explain what a Tritan motor is. Romeo, MI was mentioned as the home of the 4.6L. I worked there for 6 years until I was transfered else where. Also made there is the 4.6L 3V Mustang, the old SC Cobra Mustang 5.4L and the big bad Ford GT motor. Pretty cool to see all the work that goes into putting togther some great motors.
According to a buddy who works on GT's, those engines are a 5.4L with turbo and different heads.

Right, I was only mentioning that the Ford GT was built there. The rest of the motors there are 4.6L and that the cobra mustang comes with a supercharger. I was not clear on that. And actually where I work now is where the Mustang is made. It's hard to work and drool at the same time. LOL!!!
Dodge calls it a hemi because the combustion cambers are hemisphiracle. Like a dome. That's how it got its name.
This is true, and Dodge is using the classic moniker heavily. If you all didnt know, the chambers of the Triton motors actually make them "hemis" as well.
