Remote Oil Filter

I've got a 1950 239 V8 Flathead that doesn't even have a filter on it. I have noticed there is an oil outlet right below the pressure guage and there appears to be another oil outlet below and slightly back of the dipstick (smaller brass plug here). Are these the right holes and would it be possible to tap into these holes and install a remote oil filter on the firewall? Any suggestions on where to buy the remote filter setup w/hoses? Thanks in advance for your time.

Sounds like the guy who had it before you just decided to go with frequent oil changes. The flathead oiling system is just by-pass filtration and only sees 10-15% of the oil. A remote oil filter wouldn't be much better than what you have right now.

You are right about the line locations - that one at the rear of the block feeds into the back side of the filter canister and a line comes out the bottom of the canister and runs to the bottom of the block near the oil dipstick tube.

Depends on how much you want to drive it. If frequently, you can find a filter canister on ebay or one of the guys here might have one with a firewall mount - late model trucks with flatties had them, but most have a stand that attaches with 3 head bolts - top rear driver's side head.

If you don't drive much, just change the oil every 1,000 miles and leave the way it is. Even with a filter, frequent changes is a good idea. I probably change mine every 3-4,000.

Of course you can get ultra-serious and get one of the modern full flow filtration kits that require cutting holes in the side of your oil pan and routing hoses to a remote modern filter.......

Remote Oil Filter

Those are the holes alright. I run a remote filter on my flathead. What it captures I am unsure, but it has to be better than nothing. I picked mine up at a UAP/NAPA, so any auto parts store will supply them. You can see it mounted on my truck in my picture gallery.
