What is the Difference

Between a cat back system, and having a muffler shop run duals from the cats back with less restrictive mufflers. I realize that you would probably lose the stainless pipe

There is no difference --- other than cost to buy and install. The muffler shop system might be little cheaper depending on mufflers, pipe and tips that you may buy.

I figure for most of us the difference is just a few bucks.

The "store bought" sets boast Mandrel bends for better flow and they may be better tuned for max performance. BUT Im a rookie and not sure.

Cat back you get: Mandrel Bent Piping, usually stainless steel pipe, a kit that gets shipped to you that you can bolt in your driveway, and USUALLY engineered and tested to perform the best on your truck.

Custom you get: Outlet options and layouts you may not find in a cat back system.

What ive learned is pricing depends on where you live. In some places, a cat back system is cheaper, and in others, its cheaper to go custom. Also, not everyone knows a muffler shop that will meet their standards on quality of work, that is a problem I had locally for a while. My first system was custom, I scrapped it for a Magnaflow SISO bolt on, and then changed again to the custom true dual setup I have now.
