Lifter difference?

Are the stock 302 and 351W flat tappet (none-roller) hydralic lifters about the same? In other words, can they be swapped? Do they show roughly the same preload when installing? As a none-adjustable rocker system, do you just tighten the nut on the rocker all the way down and forget about it? I'm putting a 351W RV cam and lifters in my 302. I know about the firing order.

Also, Can the rail type rockers of a '71 302 handle a .453" valve lift (stock is about .368")? Thanks all!

Flat tappet 302 and 351w cams and lifters are the same.

Yes, you just tighten down non-adjustable rocker arms to the tourqe spec.

Rail rockers should handle that much lift. Only .453 lift should be safe from coil bind, but the stem hieght above the the springs must be correct for rail rockers. As I understand it, Rail Rockers won't work on 76 and newer valve stem heights, nor on pre- 68 valve stem heights. You run the risk of releasing the retainers and sucking a valve is that isn't sorted out.

Max rpm with rail rockers are lower due to the same risks.

The post 76 sled fulcrum non-adjustable rockers are the best stock set up IMO.

Thanks P51D, I'll be using the same spring, valve, retainer setup (all in good shape). I noticed that the retainers on this '71 302 are two piece. A small center section holds the retainer clips, and this section fits (tapers) into the retainer body. Is that stock for this year? I have about .670" distance between the bottom of the retainer and the top of the guide (not counting the standard rubber seal). Enough clearance here you think? Actually, it's all installed (and the springs don't bind), but I haven't fired it up yet!

Stock springs can usually handle up to about a .525" lift cam. as far as coil bind is concerned.
