Busy weekend

Got a lot of little stuff done this weekend.

Swapped out my tires & wheels - so now I'm running legal tread on something better looking than the factory wheels (white 8-spoke "wagon wheels").

Fixed my running boards (they were kinda hangin' in a couple of places).

Fixed my driver's side door so it would close without having to lift up on the handle (upper hinge was pretty worn)

Replaced my GPs - starts right up now

Swapped out my rear bumper (it was pretty twisted and messed up)

Dialed my timing back a couple of degrees. Now it only "rattles" with the cold advance on and basically no more smoking

Put some coil spacers in my front coils to lift the front end up a little - the thick rubber kind that encircle an entire coil

Little by little I'm getting it squared away. Turning into a pretty nice truck.

Next comes the exhaust....

well you just got new wheels and leveled the front out some. I believe that warrants pic posting.

OT-hows the 4wd conversion Idea going? and what do you plan on for exhuast?

Yeah, maybe. I think I'll still wait till I give it a good scrubbing down first though.

No progress on the 4WD conversion yet. Haven't had time to go get the other truck.

My exhaust plan is based on a 3" ATS exhaust kit (for a turbo) that I got cheap. I'm going to cut the crossover pipe in two and add a couple of elbows to the two halves and weld those into some 4" pipe to make my Y. From there I'll either neck it down to 3" or maybe go 4" all the way back to the muffler and then down to 3" to use the straight thru muffler and tail pipe from the kit.

Just stick with 3" unless you're going to go 4" the whole way. Don't think you need an expansion chamber on it.

Don't think there's any benefit to be had, eh?

Oh, BTW, remember how "lumpy" my idle was, Malcom? I figured out part of the problem. After seeing a couple of people post that the 6.9 should idle at around 625 RPMs, it dawned on me. I could "see" my tach in my head and it was sitting just under the first major hash mark at idle - in other words it was idling at just under 500 RPMs. I adjusted the idle up to where the needle is just a little bit above the 500 RPM mark and it is MUCH smoother now. That was one more little thing I got done on Saturday.

Slowly but surely.....

LOL! No, no, the tach is real alright - factory installed. I was only saying I could "see" what it looked like at idle (in my imagination) when I was reading posts on the board.

BTW, you were right about my air filter. I hadn't noticed until you said something about it, but when I went back and looked at it, sure enough, it's a K&N!

I know you don't like them, but I've been running them on my Jeeps for a while now, and I like 'em just fine. They take a little maintenance, but as long as you clean 'em regularly, they seem to work quite well. Even in the dusty environment of off-roading, no dust seems to get through.

Every time I take mine off for cleaning I run my fingers around inside to see if there is any dust that has gotten through. So far, so good. But then I clean mine at least every oil change - sometimes more often if I've been driving in dusty conditions.

Oh, ok. It should still run smooth whatever rpm it's idling at though. It didn't sound too far off to me.

That's my only beef with K&Ns. You would not believe how many I see that are just caked with grease from never being cleaned. That, and the expense and time required to clean them. Quite the racket they have going.

Well she idles smooth now. Look at it this way - it was idling about a third slower than it should have been. Any engine turning that slow is gonna' be kinda' jittery....

Well that depends on what you clean them with. I don't use their expensive cleaning kit - I dunk mine in a tub of gasoline. I still use their oiling spray, but can re-oil about 8-10 times with one can. Over the long haul, it is cheaper than buying a new filter every other oil change or so.....

Good luck convincing me of the cheaper part. Only in your case where you didn't have to buy it first.

LOL! Or like in the case where I bought an entire FIPK for my Heep - including the filter - used of course - for only $75?

I look at it like this. ~$55 for the K&N and ~$20 for two cans of the spray oil for it = $75 total. How many paper filters can you buy for $75? At $13 apiece you only get 5 - with change, so we'll say you found a deal and got 6.

Just assume I'm cleaning mine at every oil change - 3K miles, and you're replacing yours every other oil change - 6k miles. For $75 I can clean an re-oil mine around 20 times - enough to run 60k miles. In the same 60k miles, you'll replace yours 10 times - at a cost of ~$130. Even if you go to changing yours every third oil change, then you'd still have thrown away 6 and have 6k miles on your 7th filter. That's $91 you'll have spent on filters, even pushing them to 9k miles each. Meanwhile my truck is getting a fresh clean filter every 3k miles! Of course if it isn't being driven in dusty conditions, I can get away with cleaning mine a little less frequently if I want, and save even more $.

IMHO, any way you slice it, the K&N filters pay for themselves, not to mention being less restrictive - which equals HP & gas mileage.....

But that's just my $.02
