New here, purchased a 06 f-350 a couple of weeks ago with 15,000 miles on it and this is my first diesel, have alyways used mobil 1 in my gas burners with wix filters, called the local auto parts yesterday and was told the 15-40 has a foaming problem. They suggested 10-30 heavy duty ford oil, so how about some advice? What about synthetic's?
What ever oil you purchase be sure it is CI4 rated or higher. This is diesel oil only. Do not use a oil not specific for diesels. It should be spelled out in the diesel engine suppliment book in the glove box.

If it is a 15W-40 oil than it is a "diesel rated oil".... sounds like you have a "stupid auto parts person" problem!!!
Choose the brand of diesel oil you want and look for the CI4+ API rating or the new CJ4 API rating. If its got the rating... then it meets all of Ford's spec's.
Use a Racor, Motorcraft or Fram oil filter as they are all made by Racor and meet OEM specs (do not use a will-fit filter as they are not OEM). Change oil every 5,000 miles and you will be fine!!
I use Rotella-Syn (5W-40) and buy it at Walmart. They also have the Rotella conventional oil in 15W-40 weight. Your local auto parts store may have a different brand... but just look for the CI4+ API rating and you are good to go!!!
To continue with this post, my local Ford dealer is pushing hard lately to use 10w-30 in our diesels. They local Ford rep has put out a memo to our region (not sure what the area is, but I'm un Utah) with some specifics. I'm waiting to get a copy of it from a friend of mine at the dealership. Basically, they are saying that some people are reporting 2-3 mpg increase because the thinner oil allows the injectors to pump up quicker, providing more power. More power means better mileage assuming you're foot isn't too heavy right? There was a TSB put out by Ford reporting using this grade oil for slow starts and smoke during startup. Finding a diesel approved 10w-30 in my area is proving a pain in the butt, but I have some Rotella on it's way. Looking through my manual, it does say that 10w-30 is preferred for tempratures below freezing so being it's winter in Utah, it shouldn't be too much of a problem.
Note: I am only passing on these claims and have yet to actually do it. I'm due for an oil change here soon, so I'll report my results. I'd love to hear some comments regarding this 'supposed' change.
Yea that's what the guy at o'reilly's auto parts here in alabama was telling me the other day about the 10-30. I dont know if it's fact or fiction about the 15-40 foamming or not, you know the oil issue seems to pretty much be a matter of preferance. For years in my gas trucks I have always used mobil 1 syntethic with wix filters, why I dont know that's just the combo I liked. I have abouy 4 thousand miles before I have to make a decision on what to use in this truck, until then guess I will just keep reading the forum.
They are shorter and allow for the oil to drain out of the oil-filter housing. Use Fram, Motorcraft or Racor (all Racor made) for OEM fit and filtration.
Use any brand of API certified CI4+ motor oil in either 15W-40 or 5W-40 synthetic. Yes, there is a 10W-30 weight diesel oil, but it is not for towing and it is a known fact that the 6.0L shears oil down that starting with a 40 weight is better than starting with a 30 weight.
The weight of an oil does not determine if an oil foams or not. It is the add-pack that each company blends into the base stock and if certified as CI4+ or CJ4... then you meet or exceed all of Ford's oil requirements for the 6.0L motor.
Just change oil and filter every 5,000 miles regardless and enjoy... many of us do!!!
