The check engine light is on, it's a 4.9 with C-6, feels sluggish, but the diagnostic port is nowhere to be found, been told there isn't one, how do I get the codes. It's a friends van, not mine, he had his brother do a plug change, lights been on ever since, I was thinking he may have a plugged cat, but believe he told me he had it removed. I was thinking maybe he had a vacuum line off since it was fine till the plugs were replaced, but I'd still like to check the codes.
Its tucked away between the battery and the under side of the driver's side fender under the hood. I know it is there. Doesn't matter if its a CA or 49 stater, its the same location.
And that Autozone say's there isn't one doesn't suprize me. Those guys couldn't find their butt with both hands and a road map.
Clubwagon is right. It has an OBDI connector under the hood on the drivers side rearward of the battery. It's fairly easy to check the codes but be aware that your check engine light may be burned-out (or disconnected by the previous owner). If so, you may need a simple test light to check the codes.
NEED HELP 1996 club wagon xlt
5.8 ltr engine is racing like crazy at idle. also speedometer is intermittent. I changed speed sensor in rear same result. also put new map valve on throttle body no change
I think what your Autozone man was talking about is an OBD II data port. He may be correct that some '95s have them and others don't. That was about the time that OBD II was implemented.
The OBD I port that your van is equipted with is where Steve said it is, but it doesnt look like an OBD II port. There are two plugs there that have a cap on them which is also a storage hanger for the two plugs. You unplug them from the cap and the plugs will be hanging on the end of the wires they are connected to. The plugs themselves are not firmly connected to the van like an OBD II plug.
