Bought a 2000 F350 with a 7.3, 93000 miles, if the cps is a problem spot for the 7.3 maybe I should just put in a new one ahead of time, also looked at the location ,doesn't look the nicest place to get at.
I think I would just carry a spare like everyone says to besides you dont know the one in the truck might be new no need to replace what is not broke. Just my .02 cents
Okay, I'm experiencing the "engine cranks but won't start" routine and I've read several posts mentioning the CPS, carrying spares etc. What is it, and where is it?
it senses when the cam is at the #1 position, so the comp can time the firing of the injectors, etc. You will find it at about the ten o'clock position above the harmonic balancer... you need a 10mm socket an a 2-3" ext and a small pry tool to pop it out. becareful with the connector and clean the contacts!
Excellent, thank you! Well before i go and start the complicated stuff, I'm going to begin with thoroughly cleaning my battery connectors and ensuring the batt's have a good level of water in them etc. When I use a jump box on the passenger side battery it fires right up. So I'm hoping it's just a run of the mill weak battery situation, and if so, I will still get a CPS to keep handy because now that my ignorance is no longer bliss, it will go bad if not already, soon (Murphy's Law).
The reason it puzzles me on the troubles with the CPS is where I use to work we had Fords 350 in the early 90's with 7.3 and never had any go bad , of course they weren't the powerstrokes.

Do yourself a favor and have them BOTH load tested. If even one is bad you need to replace BOTH of them. The test is free at most parts stores as well as any Wally with a TLE.
Well for now, problem is solved. Turned out to be a simple matter of cleaning the battery terminals/cables.
I once again was able to start it using a jump box on the pax side battery which is the primary. This told me it just wasn't cranking fast enough (as another guy on here told me in another posting), so I began by donig the cleaning and wal-lah! Fired right up time after time. Used my hand held battery tester prior to and it told me each had a full 12.5 volt charge in each. They ended up being pretty cruddy too. I also added a little clean rain water to each as well.
Just goes to show ya before we get into thinking com, plicated, eliminate the simple stuff first.....Still gonna get me a spare CPS to carry around.
Point well taken. It's on my agenda to purchase one over the weekend. Now these can be bought at the local parts store, correct? I've heard Ebay as well. If I search Ebay is there a certain model # etc. I should be looking for to fit the 2000 7.3L?
