Automatic hub options

I'm buying a 01 lariat superduty. I didn't notice at first it has warn lockouts up front. Buying a decked out luxo truck and having to jump out in the shiznit to lock the hubs is bs imo! How much is is auto ones going to cost me? Do I have options? I seen a superduty with hubs labeled "free auto and lock" They seem to be the best of both worlds, but I don't know nothing more on them or even if thay are going to fit on an 01. My buddies 01 just has automatic hubs period on his. Thanks in advance...

I am going to throw my auto hubs in the trash as soon as I get some Warn's.
Maybe we should trade?
I have taken these things apart twice and they still operate when they want to.
So like countless others before me.........out they go!

That might just be an option. Where are you from? I maybe lock 4x4 once or twice a year for a few minutes to get off a muddy job site or get across a snowy intersection. It is bad enough I sometimes have to be in that crap let along having to jump out in it. I'm sure the auto's are rebuildable, right? Get them to work and forget they are their for the most part. Are yours the ones with the manual override or just auto all the time?

Care to take a guess my solute to you buddy?

On a side note I guess I was mistaken. I could have swore I seen a free position labeled on the auto hub, but I guess it is just auto and lock. I guess they all should be this way. Only some are worn to the point of not reading them anymore. Today I stopped at the dealer and tried every SD on the lot only half the auto hubs turn. Corrosion I guess? Looks to me like cast aluminum. Never the less they should work if one, "a person takes good care of them" and two, "not to abuse them". I will replace them so the truck is complete.

lariat79sc,

Do you have ESOF (ie a little switch on the dash to select 4-Wheel drive) or do you have a lever on the floor?

If you have a lever on the floor to select 4-wheel drive, automatic hubs will not work.

I got rid of my Auto hubs after they quit working. I removed them, disassembled them, lubed them and they still didn't work. Seems they were about $300+ each to replace. I put in the Warns for under $200 and 30 mins labor. Now I turn them in about late Nov and back out about mid March. In the interim, I just turn the dash switch whenever I want 4wd - which is every time I come up my 3000ft long/400ft elev gain driveway.

A lot of people recommend "exercising" the auto hubs at least once per month so you might need to use them more than 2x per yr.

I live in Saskatchewan so I pretty much need 4wd all winter.
My hubs turn freely but the problem is intermittent.
If you want to trade I'm in.
Mine are the auto lock with manual over ride for the ESOF system.

I'm not totally stupid. I was a class A and heavy equipment mechanic for over a decade before I dropped it all for the family business where I still get plenty of wrench time. I figure I can take care of my pick-up. I realize automatics need TLC and manuals need very little, but the fact remains they're so convenient. I can get brand new ones at a discount from my automotive buddies at the dealer. I'll research that option. saskdiesel I'm leaning towards brand new if the deal isn't too bad, but these Warns on the truck currently look like new. I might be inclined to make you a deal if things work out...

I haven't had any problems with my hubs, but I do need to replace the vacuum line on my left side. Can I use any vacuum line and what size is it?
Thanks,
Ron W.
