What rpm should i be shifting my 360 FE at. I just put a tach in the truck and i was shifting it around 2400 but i didn't know how much higher i could push it.
Without blowing it up, you could probably go up to 5000rpm. I'd keep it below 4500rpm though, as anything more is wasting your time. If it's got the stock 2 barrel and stock exhaust manifolds on it though, anything over 3500rpm is probably wasting your time.
well a 360 shouold rev higher, it's got the shorter stroke. it's just isn't built from the factory like the 390 is! JMO
Sure it has a shorter stroke, but it has a lower compression ratio too. The factory rates both the 360 and the 390 at 4400 rpm, but the real world is not what the factory gets with a perfect test motor.

Perhaps I should clarify my original post. You can shift whenever you please. 2,400 rpm is ok, 1,500 is ok, whatever you want. I don't know why you'd need to shift at a higher rpm.
When my truck had it's original 360 and a four speed, I shifted it at a higher rpm when it had a load on it, than when it didn't. I normaly shifted at around 1,500 rpm.

The 360 was never what anyone would call a "Power House". They won't rev very high and were only rated at 215 hp @ 4400 and torque is 327 ft/lbs @ 2400. That 215 was without the truck's exhaust. tranny or any accessories. It's never a bad idea to shift at or just past peak torque.
yea, but I bet if they got some more compression ratio they would run much better. basically identical to a 390, just not a stroker I guess you'd say, and w/ less compression......I dunno, they run forever though, even w/ no oil...lol.....Damn near bullit proof in stock form.
The truck 390 wasn't a power house either. Try 255 hp @ 4400 and 376 ft/lbs @ 2600 for the truck 390. Now the car motors, at least the 4 barrel one, we a totally different matter. Then again the was the 10.5 to 1 copressioned 2 barrel motor.
