Converter Lockup

Hi guys,

I have a 2006 F350 4x4, 5.4L engine, with the torqueshift automatic transmission. My question is, does the torque converter lock-up before shifting into overdrive or after? I'm trying to trace down the source of a vibration and noise. For instance, at 65 mph with the cruise control on, the truck has a driveline vibration with a rumble/hum. When going down a hill in this mode, the rumble goes away. I'm trying to see if it's the driveshaft or somewhere in the transmission. Any help or suggestions will be must helpful. I'm not getting much help from the rdealer I bought the truck from.

Thanks,
Dave

Usually they unlock for shifting and once the driveshaft is spinning at the same speed as the engine, the t/c locks up again.

Get under the truck and try wiggling the D/S and look for heavy rust or anykind of rash. Some one here has a decent write up on using a hose clamp to check the d/s.

Drive at the speed in which the vibration/hum is the worst. Then lightly hold your left foot on the brake pedal while working the accelerator with your right.

All your trying to do is engage the brake light switch. This will unlock the converter. You will need to play with the accelerator to maintain the vehicle speen and engine RPM.

Good luck chasing it. You could always leave it out of OD. If its a driveshaft or axle issue, the vibration will still be present without the relavenceof engine RPM.
