New PSD 2000 model

I just purchased my first F250 PSD. It is a 2000 model with 85,000 miles. I purchased it in Amarillo and drove it home to Pampa it took the entire trip to bring the fuel mileage up from 5 to 10.6 or so and that is the best it has done. I have only had it for 1 full day now and would like to know what I can do to improve the mileage. It seems to run good and I let my Dad drive it he has a 1997 with over 300,000 miles that he bought new and he thinks it is fine just may need a few minor things to get the mileage up. Any suggestions out there from the experts?

Thanks
buck

Is that milage from the overhead computer?
It is kniow to be in-accurate especially if a tuner/chip is being used.
If it were me I would

1 Change thhe oil and filter
2 Change the fuel filter
3 fill the tank
4 hand calculate milage ( miles driven divided by gallons used)

do all that and get back to us.

ignore the computer. Or at least reset it (think you push both buttons) then you'll get the readings from now on out, not averaged from the previous owner. Follow powerstrokin's advice, check you air filter gauge. If you don't get close to 15 calculated mpg then look for other issues.

You MUST calculate all of your mileage manually or you are lost.

Yup. I've got about the identical truck......I've gotten 20mpg on good, highway runs several times......Mostly averaged about 18mpg (if mostly highway)......about 15 mixed with lots of city driving......You should be getting a LOT better......

It was from overhead computer and after reset it is doing about 15 from the overhead. Thanks for the quick response. Now off to research the best chip to put on the truck for programming. I would like one that will let me select it as i need it. like mileage, power, speed ect.

thanks all

Again, calculate manually and use the puter display lie-o-meter for amusement. Never get below 1/4 tank of fuel if you can help it.

DP-Tuner seems to be the chip of choice here, though I have a TS and am pleased with it.

Also, don't trust those guages on the airbox... they get cracks, pinholes, etc... ya just have to occasionally pull the air filter and LOOK... should be able to at LEAST see daylight thru it. And never assume just cuz ya replaced it three months ago, it's still good.... each of our trucks have been going thru one every month or two.
