How do you tell just by looking at a 351 if its a Windsor or an M? What is a good transmission for Either?

If it has 6 valve cover bolts, its a windsor series engine. a 335 series (351m, 400) will have 8.

Welcome to the site !
This is really an engine question not a 73-79 truck question.
The Windsor wasn't ever put in these 73-79 trucks.
FTE has the 335 series and the V90* series engine forums for engine questions.
Topic:
The 351M has 8 valve cover bolts and a dry intake manifold.
The 351W has 6 valve cover bolts and a wet intake manifold.
Auto transmissions:
The 351M had a C6 attached to it
The 351W had a C4 attached to it.

easy, a 351M is a big block, the 351W is almost the same block size as a 302. The 351M is also in the same category as 351C and 400.

Actually.... No it isn't.
Ford doesn't have: Big block/Small block definitions like the other companies Mopar/GM/
Ford has engine families.
But also the 400 by Ford's specs is a small block.
I have book this from Ford for small block engines.

Some 351W engines had C6 attached to them. I had an 88 Bronco with a 5.8 and a C6. Another transmission that fits the 351M is the NP435 4 speed. Any transmission that will fit a 460 will fit the 351M. They will bolt up anyway.
