Have a 99 F150 w/ 4.6L. Unless I run high octane, on hills and heavy acceleration, the engine pings. It didn't do that before. Any ideas? I changed the plugs and wires during the summer.
I have a 1998 4.6 that did the same thing for quite some time. The check engine light never came on until I replaced the exhaust system. Check the Mass Air Flow sensor. I cleaned mine several times, but the problem was still there. Finally, I replaced it and havent had a problem since.
There are several causes for what you describe though. I would recomend doing a search for "detonation" or "pinging". You will get a wealth of information and ideas about what to try.
If you have never cleaned the MAF, it wouldn't be a bad idea, even if it isn't the cause of your problem.
Hope this helps solve your problem, if it doesn't, post again and i'm sure those with more knowledge than me can help you out.
