The front tank has its own internal electrical pump, I'm pretty sure (my 89 F250 does). The rear tank runs off an external pump. I was running of the rear tank for awhile until I fixed the main internal tank pump. In short: I'm pretty sure they have different pumps. Have you checked your fuel filter (an easy fix, and wouldn't hurt to put a new one on if you don't know how old it is)?

I'm a newbie so you might want to wait for an ol' timer to reply.

Both tanks have an internal pump on my 87 and 88---you need to check all the electrical connections too--a big problem up here in salt country(New Hampshire)

I had the same problem on my 87, I disconnected the hose from the rear tank at the rail pump and switched the key on to see if fuel would pump from the rear tank, no fuel, new pump installed, all is well again.
