Today I heard about a 1970 4x4 F-250 4sp that supposedly has a 428 CJ in it. I can clearly tell that it is an FE. It has a cast iron 4 barrel intake. Other than that, I can't really tell if it is a CJ, or even a 428. Do you experts have any tips to ID the engine?
I really appreciate your help, could be a neat find!
www.428cobrajet.com click on component id. This will id the heads, intake etc... block will be the tricky thing. Hard to tell the bore size with the heads on but that's key to know exactly what you have. Check for a 4" stroke also. Post the head and intake casting numbers when ya can. The CJ site will tell you quite a bit.
Take a look at the exhaust manifolds.
If it has 16 exhaust bolts ( 4 per port )it is a Cobra Jet head at least.
14 bolts would indicate a 390 GT head, which according to the ford book. Was used on very (1968)early Cobra Jets.
