Hey ya'll. have an '88 BII 2.9L A4LD Auto trans, manual transfer-case, manual hubs. Blew the tranny last night. No reverse, no 3rd/OD. It's toast.
Meanwhile, I have a '91 Ranger 4x4 sitting there in the driveway, nose-to-nose with the BII. It's a 4.0 (OHV) w/M5OD 5-speed. Body is toast on the Ranger.
Will the M5OD work with the BII's 2.9 & transfer-case? (the Ranger's is a push-button automatic). I know I'll need the flywheel from a 2.9 manual ...
(I one-day plan to use the 4.0 in the BII) ...
Will the clutch/brake pedals out of the Ranger work in the BII?
the m5od will go inplace of the a4ld, you may need to swap d/s if there is a different in lenths of the trannies, the bw 1350 t-case should just bolt right up to the m5, yes you will need to swap flywheels. though if your doing all that, why not just drop in the 4.0. basically about the same amount of work lil more time. and you will be happier in the long run. yes the pedals will swap over too. they used the same body style till from 83-92 on the rangers and bIIs basically are the same front. also while your at it. take the dana 35 front and the 8.8 rear from the ranger and put it on the BII. you already have it , and its a drop/swap change.
Have decided to do the D35 front-end and 8.8 rear swap while I'm doin' the tranny. Thanks frankenbroncoII ... everything looks absolutely bolt-compatible. I had done new front-coil springs , shocks, ball-joints and tie-rod-ends on the Ranger not too long before it expired. I'll have a new-riding ride.
The 4.0 will wait tho. Been sitting for 3 years and I want to open 'er up and freshen 'er up so I'm stayin' with the 2.9 for now (runs pretty good anyway). I'll pull it and put it on my engine stand. Maybe get it into the Bronco in the Spring.
Does anyone know if I need the engine control computer out of an '88 with standard trans.? Or can one fool the ecc from the automatic? I've read that the tc lockup and/or OD engagement are controlled by the ecc. What's the worst-case? Won't run at-all? Check-engine light stays on?
Are Chilton's wiring diagrams pretty decent? I have their BII, Ranger, Explorer manual ... any other recommended sources?
sounds good, i dont know about the puter deal i have never put a manuel in place of an automatic that was puter controled. the only issues i would see is a check engine light. and a high idle for a manuel. the manuel tranny only needs and engine idle of 750 while the auto may need idle of 850-950 rpms.
