Hi, new to this site but not Fords. I'm currently looking at buying a 96 XL F-150 I6 4x4 w/100,000 miles, auto. The guy wants 6000 and it's in good condition. I currently have a 84 F-150 w/302 and in need of an upgrade. Anyone with any exp. with the I6/ good/bad. Is this a good price. I did check KBB but wanted some other opinions. Thanks.
Make sure you know EVERYTHING works. It is easily overlooked to not check things like AC, windows, heat, making sure the air works correctly, windshield washers, little things. Make sure the 4x4 system works without a problem. Also, check the alignment of the body panels and seams, if they are out of alignment that can indicate the truck was in an accident. It doesn't have a manual shifter, it has push button doesn't it? If it is a manual shifter, then make sure it shifts smoothly. If it has a hard time getting into 4L then that usually means he doesn't use it and hardly puts it into 4l, which means he probably neglected to keep things lubricated down there. My dad never uses 4x4, maybe once every two years, and if he does, it is for like 10-20 feet. He never uses 4L and presently, you can only shift from 2H to 4H. As for the I-6, it is a very low-end torque motor. It is a workhorse. As an easy explanation, torque is how much work is done, and HP is how fast it is done. The numbers are approx 160 or so HP at 3400rpm and about 260-265 at 2,000rpm. So the I-6 is not a quick/race motor, it is fairly slow but when you put a load on it, is when it shines. I have one in my truck and I have never seen a truck with so much low end torque(gas). This engine does very well on hills towing and has great durablity. It is argueably fords best quality engine ever built. I can't remember if you said it was an auto or a manual. But if it is a manual, it is more then likely a mazda 5 speed (M5OD). If you are going to be doing any towing above 3,000lbs it wouldn't be a wise choice with the mazda, it is a light duty tranny. I have one in my truck, i pull an approx. 2,500lb snowmobile trailer a few times in the winter and it pulls great. If you have an auto, perfectly fine. If taken care of, that I-6 will last a long time. Mine has 105,000 mi on it and never burns oil. If you look in the "inline six" catagory, and do a search for the topic "mileage king" there are many people who claim above 300,000 miles and a few as much as 450,000-500,000 miles on the I-6. If everything works, and the body is good and little rust on the undercarage i would say thats not a bad price.

I was just thinking about the price, and you forgot to mention what kind of features it has. With the XL it is faily basic but is it a supercab? Does it have dual tanks? 6-8ft bed?

Hi, it's a standard cab, 8ft. bed with daul tanks, new cooper 31x10.5 tires, and bedliner. What you mentioned about the 4w, it shifted good into 4wl, but was hard going back into n, but 4wh and 2wh both shifted in and out good. I work with this guy and suspect the it has had little 4 wheel driving. Thanks again.
In that case, the shifter linkage probably just needs some lubricatoin and it will work normally. If this truck is everything that you want, its in good condition, then go for it. Try to talk him down a little obviously, but that isn't a bad price. My truck is a 95 Eddie bauer, 2wd, standard tranny, 6ft bed, supercab and mine was 8500 bucks with 95k mi on it. Just to give you an idea (mine was pretty cheap). If it had an auto wiht 4x4 it would have been in the 11s. And just to give you an idea of what kind of condition mine is in, in stock form Kelley blue book gave a price of around 8-8500. When i went to get it inspected, took it to the shop where this guy my dad knows drove it. He offered me 10 grand on the spot. (This was a year ago by the way, so the price has gone down since then)

Sounds like a good truck. The 300 is a GREAT motor, just not a fun motor. When I was thinking about buying a truck a brought home one with a 300 and the other with a 302 both with 5 spds and for all practical purposes even. My girlfriend had never driven a stick and could drive the 300 with ease, even on a hill, not the 302.
Well I could drive both and got a good deal on the 5.0L but I often with I would have got the six bang'n bitch. It'll be a dog with an auto though
