Backup Camera

Anybody here using a backup camera? I already have a screen and am considering adding a camera. What kind and where are you mounting? Anything to look for or for that matter avoid? I would also welcome any pictures of the installation.

I use a backup camera, it works great. On my truck there was a hole right above the top left corner where the rear tag goes, it was big enough for the camera to mount in there. Works just dandy.

I have been using one for 2 years now and it is the greatest. I use the Pioneer AVIC for my screen. I have it mounter right above my reciever for my hitch. There are pictures of it on page. Just look in Exterior photo section

tex25025, are you talking about the hole for the spare tire lowering rod? If so what will you do should you need to lower the spare? I was looking at the same hole but the spare tire concerns me.

jetact, am I correct in thinking that is the Pioneer camera? How did you mount it to the hitch or bumper?

It is, but I'm playing on the odds that I shouldn't have to get to my spare tire often enough that if I need to for that one or two occasion, the camera easily pops out, then I'm able to get to the tire(I did think of that before I put it in there). The last truck I had, I might have had to fix the tire, but I never had to actually use the spare tire, and I'm hoping that is the case with this one, it is a gamble, but (for right or wrong) I'm taking the chance that I'll be this lucky again. Unless I'm going to be needing to get to the spare every other week, I don't see hardship of an extra 5 min to get it out of the spot(unless its cold, rainin, or snowing or any other inclimental weather that might come about). Plus having it there gives a nice finished look, and you don't have to worry about anyone mucking around with it as much, if they even figure out what it is from a quick glance.

Thanks, I thought that you would need tools to remove the camera. Could you give me some info on what camera you used?

I have a Eclipse in dash GPS in my 2004 have the matching camera for this it does not have its own LED lights for night but back up lights does the job. Mine is mounted in side a 2" tube which slides into the receiver then lock pin holds the tube in mount a round 4 pole trailer plug on the truck put the male end on the camera cord and it can become portable. We towed our 5 th wheel toy hauler over 20,000 miles to car shows this summer when the trailer gets hooked up just take the camera to the back of it and plug it in for double duty, there is also a receiver tube on the back of the trailer and camera wires run back there with another plug installed.

For those with the backup camera in place is there a switched 12V line back there already or did you run power to the camera?

Mine is mounted on a double sided sticky tape. Like I said it has been there for two years and never moved. Yes it is a Pioneer camera. As for the question about power the camera should just have one wire going to the camera and it should get power from your dash unit or brain or the stereo

I also have an Eclipse AVN 7000 unit with the Eclipse backkup camera. I installed the camera up near the tail gate handle. Ran the camera wire inside the tail gate and out thru the left side hole in the tail gate. From there used split wire loom to run the wire to the cab.
I adjusted the camera so I can just see the ball on my receiver which makes it idea when hooking up to my trailer.
Also makes it easier to judge distances to impact because the receiver sticks out beyond the bumper.

glruff,
Doesn't the wire running through your tailgate eliminate you from taking it off, or did you put a plug on it so it can be removed

Not really. If I wanted to remove the Eclipse unit and reinstall the stock radio, all I woul have to do is slide the wire out of the wire loom. I did not put another plug on the camera wire it would have voided the warranty on the camera.

If you are referring to taking off the tail gate, hopefully I will not have to remove the tail gate. If I do, then the Eclipse wire has a connection about 5 or 6 ft from the camera. I could disconnect the wire there and then remove the tail gate.

Yes I was reffering to removing the tailgate. Glad they put the connector in the wire for you. Never thought I would take mine off easier but just the other day we had to take it off.

I see the pioneer camera has a long cord to it that plugs into a module with power input and a composite out. Just picked one up off ebay along with a 7" LCD. I plan on sticking it right on top of the hitch like you have.
