Are they suppose to explode? I have a set with less than 5000 miles on them and the 2nd tube from the back on the passenger side has a huge hole in the bend right by the engine. The tube is close to breaking clear off. This has been my first set of headers and I have hated them from the beginning. Should I bother spending the money on another set or should I expect this from them all? Ger
I put them on in June. I will put some pictures in my gallery so you can look at it. I first noticed a small leak and after maybe 10 miles of driving I ended up with this huge hole. It's very upsetting....
I just recieved an email from hedman tech and they blame it on the thermal wrapping that I had on that one tube. I wish I would have known that before I put it on.
I find it very hard to believe thermal wrap caused a hole of any sort. I'd imagine it was improperly made in that area, or made to too thin a specification, and the pressure busted it through. On headers or exhaust manifolds, any sort of hole quickly expands with the pressure.
The first thing I was going to ask was if you used wrap. I read an article that described just what happened to you years ago in Hot Rod or some similar mag.
Wrap can hold moisture, and cause early rust, and supposedly they can hold enough heat in some conditions to cause the metal to fail rather suddendly, like yours did. I forget the exact reason for it, but the article I read explained exactly what happened to you.
Just get new headers and forget about the header wrap. Just about all the header manufacturers will void the warrantee if it is used anyway. Its pretty good for Y pipes and the like though.
dont wrap the headers, wrap whats getting hot because of the headers. the wrap can cause heat build up at corners ect, and burn through. it also holds moisture, and accelerates the rust on them.
