hi everyone, i just bought a 1990 f250 extended cab 4x4 7.3 w/ only 49,000 miles. the e40d trans works fine now. wondering what i should do to keep it that way? from what i have been reading it is not the best. maybe an extra tranny cooler other updateing ? any suggestions apreciated thanks norm
i have a '90 4x2 with the E40D. I was told the tranny was very weakly built. I had it rebuilt to the '98 specs, which include replacing the aluminum gear cluster with steel, a buncha' bearings in place of bushings and a center support...all of which is supposed to make it a fairly decent, but, not the best, transmission. I also heard you could spend the babies inheritance on fancy torque converters...
a good TC and sonnex kit will help too. One of the problems is that Ford makes the trans slip when changing gears so you don't feel the shift. I like a strong shift, no slipping. I also use synthetic fluid since I tow a lot.
My 1993 F350 has 250.000 km on it, E4OD. I have a bigger tranny cooler (28000GVW truecool), and made sure I put in new fluid and filter when I bought it. Other than that I have no idea if the PO's ever had any tranny work done to it! Do any of you guru guys know how to tell if any upgrades have been installed??? I've looked on some transmisssion specialist sites and lots of inexpensive up grades like shift kits springs and valves are avialable. Replacing aluminum innerds with steel sounds expensive, would like to know how to figure out if its been done without doing a teardown for nothing!
thanks alot for the tips. KJLYPW i was wondering the samething. i don't know how to tell if anything has already been upgraded or not. i am definately going to install a good tranny cooler sounds like you are happy with yours, where is a good place to buy one and how much aprox. thank alot everyone norm
Heh Norm, I just posted a question on how to tell what upgrades may or may not be on my E4OD in the Misc forum section called, Clutch, Transmission, etc. Will see if any Automatic guru's are on board over there!!
KJLYPW sounds good, i found out some things about the sonnax valve & tricumulator springs. you need to take the tranny pan off to get to both. this site http://www.dieselinnovations.com/di.php?page=products&cat=5 sells both when you get there scroll to the bottom.
on the left of this site click "tech info " then scroll down and click on sonnax & tricumulator springs it shows where and how with pictures.looks like alot of other good info. thanks and good luck norm
Good looking site! 've added to favorites, Thanks, Oregon Performance Transmissions has an E-bay store, looks like losts of product and good prices, anyone bought from them?
i've seen that it looks like they have good feed back.on that diesel innovation site i called on the phone and the guy said if you order online it's free shipping.
One way to tell if the trannys been into is to see if there is a plastic plug in the bottom of the pan. When the trucks are assembled at the factory there is a plastic plug where the dipstick goes. The dipstick is pushed in and the plug sits in the pan until someone drops the pan.
