Cobraii,
I used VDO gauges in my '59. I had only one problem, and that was with the fuel sending unit to the VDO fuel gauge. I had to have it calibrated to match the sending unit on my aftermarket fuel cell. In hindsight, I believe that AutoMeter makes compatible gauges for just about every application out there, and their quality has gone way up from days of old when we used to avoid them.
AutoMeter has a full line of gauges: different sizes for all gauges you'd want on your dash + a full range of prices from affordable to "forget that"!!!
Your biggest decision besides looks and price will likely be: mechanical? or electrical gauges?
Good luck--- though you probably won't need it cuz it should be an enjoyable and fun research project.
Check out dolphin Guages I just ordered some today for my 51 F1. I will let you know how they work out. 3 3/8 Guages with dash insert will be about 350.00 usd.
