i got a 96 Bronco EB 351W. i removed the rear axle tage a while ago. i read on here that you can look at the sticker in your door jamb and tell whether or not it's limited slip. how can i tell? what do i look for and where? i read to look for an "H" somewhere. i have an H in the VIN, is that it? i'm about to replace the diff cover and i want to put that friction stuff in there too if i need it when i refill it. thanks guys!
It's a 8.8 ford, look at the axle section on the door jam sticker if its a letter and then a number its a LS, if its two numbers like 19 its an open carrier.
aw man, i got 19. so open diff right? now, tell me any advantages to having this. does that mean i can add a locker? is it worth it? oh and thanks for your reply.

Yeah thats an open diff. No advantages, an open diff will tansfer all of the power to the wheel thats the easiest to turn, so if one wheel is completly off the ground, thats the only one that will spin, and obviously thats the exact opposite of what you want.
Well you can check to see if it really does have a locker or not. If you are not the original owner of it. If the axle has both wheels off the ground, spin one of the tires. If the other whell spins the same direction it has some kind of locker in it. If the other wheel spins opisite of the one that you turn or not at all, then it is most definitely an open diff.
When you turn one wheel by hand and the other wheel turns the opposite direction its a LS.
A locker would make both wheels spin forward.
An open diff would not transfer anything to the other side.
I think the reason the LS diff spins the other wheel the wrong way is only becuase you can't spin it fast enough by hand for the clutches in there to make it go forward or something. On the ground with the LS both wheels obviously go forward.
What can you guys tell me about this? I know this is not open, is this locked or limited slip? I spun out a little at work in the gravel and found that both wheels spun out. Came home cracked it open to find this. Previous owner must have done this, axle code on door jamb is 19.
Well, at least the color looks good. I changed my grease last month and the inside looked like a BBQ grill with sticky goo on the cover. It was the first change I think in 174K miles. My door sticker axle code is H9 and know the vehicle full history. Looking at your picture I can see it is NOT limited slip like mine. At dead center there is a vertical shaft with a gear above and below. You can tell I am not a mechanic. Mine has a big "S" shaped thick spring or clip over that shaft and also some giblets and gizzards to the right which I guessed to be LS clutches which I do not see in yours. The tag on my cover is 3L88. I think I remember reading somewhere the open is 3.88 but not sure. As greystreak suggests in his FAQs "For more information on this topic visit the FTE Transmission, Axle, Differential, Transfer case Forum" Well, at least you do not need to go to Ford for the friction modifier. The tag may have been 3L55 as I can't remember if I have a 3.88 or 3.55 ratio but you get the idea.

okay sorry to be a lamer. i do have an open diff . why oh why would ford have done this. my eddie bauer has every option except signal mirrors and now i guess limited slip. thanks for ya'lls help, i gotta start saving for a locker, those damn things are expensive!!!
You must be expecting some extreme off road driving. Try searches, there are many treads on types and brands to spend your money on........if you really need additional traction. While at it don't forget to match the front end ratio with the rear if you make a change. There is also tons of info on tires, ratios, lifts, shocks, torsion bars, speedometer etc. here at FTE.
