I have a '90 F250, E40D, with a code 39 rear axel [355], springs MA, vin: 7FTHX25M3LKA24663. I bought this truck, intending to tow at least a 10K trailer and possibly a 14K trailer and carry a 1500 lbs in Motorcycle and tools. So, I've been studying the owners manual and it kinda' says the most I can tow is 7K and the most I can carry is about 4K. If I hydra-boost the brakes and put overload springs on it [I already have the tranny up to a '98 level of build], install a heavy transmission cooler and turbo it...what can I safely drag down the road? I really liked the idea of this older truck because I don't have much money, it's easier and cheaper to fix, and it's much less likely to be victim to theft and mayham. I also like the way it looks...not a Dodge/Ford or a Chevy/Dodge or a Dodge/Dodge...a Ford/Ford. I know some of you pull heavy loads...will you give me some ideas on what I need to do to upgrade mine for heavy towing?
That is a lot of weight behind an automatic. 14,000 pounds of trailer plus 1,500 pounds of motorcycles plus 7,500 pounds of truck = 23,000 pounds
I gross that much with my four speed tranny, but I also have the hydraboost brakes, lots of spring upgrades and a turbo.
With 3.55 gears and 33" tires I do have to replace a lot of U joints and the drive shafts need replaced every couple of years. I do live in the mountains so that is why I am torquing the driveline so hard.
Without a turbo you will be going up the hills rather slow, and the brakes will take a toasting going down the hills with the automatic.
The max recommended GCVW was 20,000 pounds according to Ford.
Thanks, Dave; I'll be looking for a lighter trailer...probally no 5th wheels...and I'll put a hydroboost and overloads on it. All I could find, seemed to say 12000 lbs GCVW and my truck weighs 8800 lbs. With 20k, I can adjust my load to fit.
What do you have for a truck?
I have a dump bed, snow plow subframe, big heavy hitch reciever, 4x4, 66 gallons of fuel capacity and two big side mounted tool boxes.
My lite weight full of fuel is 8080 pounds with me in the truck.
it's just an extended cab p/u 4x2...the tag on the door says 8800 lbs...I thought that was the empty weight of the truck.? Maybe not, since it seems you're set up a lot heavier than I.

Reason: used crew cab instead of k-cab
The 8800 on the tag is the recommended gross truck weight.
That is what Ford says the truck was designed to have for a total weight of the truck, cargo and passengers.
That is my 8080 pound truck with 9200 pounds of rock in the back. Yes, my gross is 17,280 pounds.
Disclaimer, Do not try this with your truck, that one is highly modified and I am a professional.
